Malta

It was 9-day trip with 3 people in the winter of 2025. It was very sunny weather, altought it was December/January. We traveled by plane and we use the cheap taxi service on the island (drive is not recommended). The accommodations were in San Pauls Bay [7 nights] and in San Julians Bay [1 night]. It was a trip with lots of beautiful sea coasts and tiny historic towns, which are architecturally interesing places, too. Beause it was New Year’s Eve, we had to skip some tourist attractions or beacause of the changes opening hours we had to organize our trip sometimes unlogical – maybe you could complete the tour also in fewer days, if there are not any public holidays during your stay.

27.12.2025 – Arrive to Malta

The tour starts at Budapest Airport and you reach Malta in the afternoon. The accommodation is in St. Paul’s Bay (photo).

28.12.2025 – Valletta

Get to know the capital city of Malta and start at the Triton’s Fountain. Not so far there is the nuew parliament building by Renzo Piano. The main attractions are the St. John’s Co-Cathedral with the Caravaggio paintings, the Republic and Strait Streets, the Grand Master’s Palace, Fort Elmo and the Upper and the Lower Barakka Gardens. (Tip: you can eat typical Maltese food at the D’Office Bistro.)

29.12.2025 – Mdina, Rabat and more

After leaving the accommodation make a stop at St. Anton’s Garden, which is probably one of the most beautiful gardens of the island. From here you can reach by foot in 20 Minutes the Farson’s Brewery. The building is also architecturaly interesting, because it is an art deco house and the visitor’s centre is also worth to visit. (Tip: the “experience” ends with a beer tasting in the bar on the rooftop.) Go further to the former capital citiy of the island, Mdina. The town has pretty medieval streets and buildings and there is a wonderful view to the whole island from the Bastion Square. Rabat is actually built together with Mdina and here you can visit the famous catacombs from the Roman period (photo). In the end of the day you can watch the sunset from the Dingli Cliffs.

30.12.2025 – Gozo

Visit the “sister” island, Gozo and take the ferry. It takes only 20-25 Minutes and meanwhile the cruise you can see also the Comino Island with the Blue Lagoon. In Gozo there are a lot of tourists and if you have only one day, you won’t see all of the attractions. (Tip: stay a night in Gozo, then you have two calm days.) Visit the Ggantija temples from the megalithic era. Walk on the Rambla Bay. And go to Victoria-Rabat, the capital of Gozo and from the Citadella you can see the whole island. In the end of the day cruise back to main island. (Tip: have lunch at the Roża Restaurant and try the local food.)

31.12.2025 – The Three Cities

Bormla, Isla und Birgu (Vittoriosa) are the three cities from where you can also see Valletta. Take a walk along the waterfront and in the end of the day go up to the Safe Haven Gardens. (Tip: not so far there is a most to see attraction, the Hypogeum, which is an interesting underground world – you must book the tickets before your visit in the right time, otherwise you have a bad luck as I had. It is also worth to visit the megalithic temples in Traxien.)

01.01.2026 – Golden Bay, Zebbug an more

Start the day with a hiking above the Golden Bay – the sea has amazing colours here. The hidden sandy beaches are formed by the bays and have a dramatic and wild feeling. Go to the heart of the island: Zebbug is a nice and tiny town with history. At the end of the day you can go to Sliema to see the vibrant side of Malta: walk along the harbour promenade and get to know Valletta from another perspective.

02.01.2026 – Marsaxlokk, Blue Grotto and more

Drive to the Ghar-Dalam Cave, which was used over thousands of years. Not so far from the cave you find the typical Maltese town of Marsaxlokk with its colourful fishing boats. (Tip: have some seafood at the La Capanna Restaurant.) Go further to the Blue Grotto, the most beautiful natural sites of Malta. Also on this coast you can find the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, the two megalithic temples with with seaview.

03.01.2026 – San Julian’s Bay

Take a walk in San Julian’s Bay. It is a very vibrant place of Malta and also the architecture is interesting here, because you can find typical Maltese bay windows, colonial style buildings from the English times and also many modern buildings. (Tip: I recommend you to try the Gozitan Restaurant.)

04.01.2026 – The way back home

Go back to home.
