MUSEUM OF OLYMPIC GAMES

Function: Museum for the Olympian Games (Ancient, Summer and Winter Olympics)

Location: Athens (Greece)

Year: 2010

Type: International competition for university students

Designer: Ádám Balog

Olympic games are not only about sport, but also the meeting of different nations and cultures. The museum would like to amplify this second meaning of the olympic games, and the volumes of the building reagates to this. There is two main volumes: the one has an introverted, horizontal mass, that hovers above the ground, and gives place for exhibition spaces. The other one is an open, glazed mass, which sits under the museum, and has a visitors centre with entrace hall, restaurant, café, conference hall and offices. The inner and outer spaces of the two-storey high visitors centre are totally merged.

The plot of the museum was a sport course, which was sunk into the terrain, therefore it is under the street level. The arrangement of the Olympic Museum wants to reflect this topography: the outer spaces have stadium-like view, and these spaces are shaded by the upper volume of the museum.
